Sigiriya Rock Fortress
Rising almost 200 meters above the surrounding plains, Sigiriya is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks. Known as the “Lion Rock,” it was once the fortress palace of King Kashyapa in the 5th century. Today, visitors climb a series of staircases to reach the summit, passing ancient frescoes, mirror walls, and water gardens along the way.
At the top, the reward is panoramic views of the jungle stretching endlessly into the horizon. Most travelers visit in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and enjoy softer light for photography.
Insider Tip: Allocate at least half a day for Sigiriya, and pair your visit with the nearby Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO site filled with centuries-old Buddhist murals and statues.
Kandy and the Temple of the Tooth
Set in the central highlands, Kandy is the cultural and spiritual heart of Sri Lanka. Its most revered site is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which houses what is believed to be a tooth of the Buddha. For Buddhists around the world, this temple is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites.
Beyond its religious significance, Kandy offers leafy streets, a scenic lake, botanical gardens, and cultural performances showcasing traditional music and dance. If you are visiting in July or August, the Esala Perahera Festival transforms Kandy into a city of pageantry, with parades of dancers, drummers, elephants, and lights.
Ella and the Hill Country
A journey into Sri Lanka’s hill country feels like stepping into another world. The town of Ella, perched among tea plantations and misty hills, is the perfect base for exploration. Highlights include:
- Nine Arches Bridge – a colonial-era railway bridge set in a lush valley.
- Little Adam’s Peak – a short hike with rewarding views over tea estates and villages.
- Ella Rock – a more challenging trek for those seeking adventure.
The train ride to Ella is often described as one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the world, winding through plantations, forests, and mountain passes.
Insider Tip: Book train tickets in advance and aim for a seat by the window on the left side if traveling from Kandy to Ella for the best views.
